Description

This easy sausage and apple stuffing is a cozy, flavorful side dish packed with savory sausage, tender bread cubes, sweet apple, and fresh herbs. It is an easy recipe for holiday dinners, easy dinner spreads, comfort food menus, and festive food ideas when you want a classic side with rich texture and warm seasonal flavor.

Ingredients

8 cups day-old bread cubes

1 pound breakfast sausage

2 tablespoons butter

1 medium yellow onion, diced

2 celery stalks, diced

1 large apple, peeled and diced

2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh rosemary, chopped

1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped

2 cups chicken broth

1 large egg

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

1. Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.

2. Spread the bread cubes out if needed so they are dry and slightly firm before mixing.

3. Cook the sausage in a large skillet over medium heat until browned and crumbled, then transfer it to a plate.

4. Add the butter to the skillet, then cook the onion and celery until softened.

5. Stir in the diced apple, rosemary, thyme, salt, and black pepper, and cook for 2 to 3 minutes.

6. Place the bread cubes in a large mixing bowl and add the cooked sausage and vegetable mixture.

7. Whisk the egg and chicken broth together in a separate bowl.

8. Pour the broth mixture over the bread mixture gradually, tossing gently until evenly moistened.

9. Stir in the chopped parsley and transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.

10. Bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes, until golden on top and tender in the center.

11. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use day-old or lightly dried bread so the stuffing holds its shape and does not turn soggy.

Choose a firm apple like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp so the pieces stay intact while baking.

Add the broth gradually and stop once the bread is moistened to keep the texture balanced.
