Ingredients
1 cup unsalted butter (softened)
1 cup granulated sugar
1 large egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ cup red sanding sugar
¼ cup green sanding sugar
Instructions
1. Cream the butter and granulated sugar until pale and fluffy.
2. Add the egg and vanilla extract; mix until smooth.
3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Gradually combine with the wet mixture to form dough.
4. Divide dough into two equal discs. Wrap and chill for 30 minutes.
5. Roll out each disc between parchment paper. Sprinkle one with red sugar, the other with green.
6. Stack the dough layers and gently press to adhere.
7. Roll the dough into a tight log. Wrap and freeze for 30 minutes.
8. Slice into rounds and arrange on a lined baking sheet.
9. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10–12 minutes or until edges are just set.
10. Cool on a rack and enjoy!
Notes
Chill time is essential: cold dough helps maintain the swirl and prevents spreading.
Use parchment paper for rolling to avoid sticking and create clean layers.
For extra sparkle, sprinkle a pinch of sanding sugar on top just before baking.
