Description

Soft Batch Frosted Sugar Cookies are a nostalgic favorite that bake up thick, soft, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. With a tender crumb thanks to sour cream, and a smooth buttercream frosting topped with cheerful sprinkles, they’re the perfect cookie for any celebration or sweet craving. This recipe yields bakery-style results that are simple to make at home and easy to customize.

Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 ½ cups granulated sugar

2 large eggs

½ cup sour cream

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

½ teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

¾ cup unsalted butter, softened

3 cups powdered sugar

2 to 3 tablespoons milk or cream

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Food coloring (optional)

Rainbow sprinkles for topping

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.

2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Add the eggs one at a time, then mix in the sour cream and vanilla until fully combined.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

5. Gradually add the dry mixture into the wet ingredients, mixing until a soft, sticky dough forms.

6. Cover and chill the dough for at least 1 hour.

7. Using a cookie scoop, portion dough onto prepared baking sheets, leaving space between each.

8. Bake for 10-12 minutes, until edges are set but centers remain soft.

9. Allow cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a cooling rack.

10. While cookies cool, prepare the frosting by beating butter until creamy, then gradually adding powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk until desired consistency is reached.

11. Add food coloring if desired.

12. Frost cooled cookies with an offset spatula or butter knife.

13. Immediately top with rainbow sprinkles before the frosting sets.

14. Let frosting set before storing or stacking.

Notes

Chill the dough thoroughly to prevent excessive spreading and ensure thick, bakery-style cookies.

Use an offset spatula for the smoothest frosting finish and apply while the cookies are fully cooled.

If you want to freeze the cookies, bake and cool them first, then frost after thawing for best texture.
