Description
This Oat Dutch Oven Apple Crisp is a rustic, warm dessert that features tender spiced apples under a crunchy oat topping. Baked in a Dutch oven for even cooking and caramelized perfection, it’s the ultimate fall or winter treat to serve with ice cream or cream.
Ingredients
6 cups apples, peeled and sliced
2 tablespoons lemon juice
1/2 cup brown sugar (for apples)
1 teaspoon cinnamon (for apples)
1 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup brown sugar (for topping)
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (for topping)
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
Instructions
1. Prepare the Apples: Peel, core, and slice apples into 1/2-inch wedges. Toss with lemon juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon. Let rest for 10 minutes.
2. Make the Oat Topping: In another bowl, combine oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Cut in butter using a pastry cutter or fork until crumbly.
3. Layer It In: Grease Dutch oven with butter or spray. Spread apple mixture evenly in the bottom. Top with oat mixture, covering fully.
4. Bake: Cover and bake in preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes. Uncover and bake 15-20 more minutes until golden.
5. Serve: Let sit 10-15 minutes before serving warm with ice cream or cream.
Notes
Use cold, cubed butter for the topping to ensure it bakes into crisp crumbs.
Granny Smith apples are best for their tartness, but Honeycrisp offers a sweet alternative.
Reheat leftovers in the oven to restore topping crispness.
