Description
A savory, herb-infused stuffing that’s golden on top and tender in the center. Made with toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, sausage, and classic spices, this is the ultimate side dish for any holiday or comfort meal.
Ingredients
10 cups day-old bread cubes
1 pound breakfast sausage
1 large onion, diced
3 celery stalks, diced
2 tablespoons fresh sage, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh thyme, chopped
1 teaspoon fresh rosemary, chopped
6 tablespoons butter
2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
1 large egg
1 teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
1. Spread bread cubes on a baking sheet and toast at 300°F for 15-20 minutes until dry and lightly golden. Cool completely.
2. In a large skillet, cook sausage over medium heat until browned. Set aside, leaving a bit of fat in the skillet.
3. Add butter to the skillet. Sauté onions and celery for 7-8 minutes until soft. Stir in herbs and cook 1 minute more.
4. In a large bowl, combine toasted bread, cooked sausage, and sautéed vegetables.
5. Whisk the egg with broth, then pour over bread mixture and stir gently to coat.
6. Transfer to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish. Cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 30 minutes.
7. Remove foil and bake an additional 15-20 minutes until golden and crisp on top.
Notes
Use day-old bread for best texture. Fresh bread becomes mushy.
Fresh herbs make a big difference—use them if available.
