Description
This Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes recipe is a comforting classic that combines tender, seasoned ground beef in a rich homemade gravy, served over creamy mashed potatoes. It’s a quick and hearty dish perfect for weeknight dinners, meal prepping, or when you simply crave something warm and filling.
Ingredients
1 pound ground beef
2 pounds Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes, peeled and cubed
4 tablespoons butter (divided)
1 cup milk or cream (warmed)
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 cups beef broth
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
1. Peel and cube the potatoes. Boil in salted water until fork-tender, about 15 minutes.
2. Drain the potatoes, then mash with 2 tablespoons butter and warm milk or cream. Season with salt and pepper. Set aside and keep warm.
3. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon until fully cooked. Drain excess fat, leaving about 1 tablespoon in the pan.
4. Sprinkle the flour over the beef. Stir continuously for 2 minutes to cook the flour.
5. Gradually whisk in the beef broth to prevent lumps. Simmer the gravy until thickened, about 5 minutes.
6. Stir in garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Adjust seasoning to taste.
7. Serve the beef and gravy over the mashed potatoes. Garnish with chopped parsley if desired.
Notes
For extra creaminess, add a dollop of sour cream or cream cheese to the mashed potatoes.
To make it gluten-free, swap the flour for a gluten-free thickener like cornstarch or arrowroot powder.
Let the gravy simmer a bit longer if you want it thicker—just watch and stir so it doesn’t burn.
