Description

French Onion Pork Chops are a comforting skillet dinner featuring juicy, seared pork chops smothered in sweet caramelized onions, simmered in savory beef broth, and topped with bubbly melted cheese. It’s a weeknight-friendly meal with the richness of a French bistro favorite.

Ingredients

2 thick-cut pork chops

2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced

1 cup beef broth

1 teaspoon fresh thyme (or ½ tsp dried)

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 cup shredded Gruyère or mozzarella cheese

1 tablespoon olive oil

2 tablespoons butter

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Season pork chops with salt and pepper.

2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear pork chops for 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside.

3. In the same pan, reduce heat to medium. Add butter and sliced onions. Stir frequently, cooking for 20–25 minutes until caramelized.

4. Add garlic and thyme to the onions. Stir for 1 minute.

5. Pour in beef broth, scraping up browned bits, and simmer gently.

6. Return pork chops to the pan, nestling them in the onions. Spoon onions over the top. Simmer for 5 minutes.

7. Top each pork chop with cheese.

8. Transfer skillet to a 375°F oven. Bake uncovered for 8–10 minutes until cheese melts and bubbles.

9. Serve hot with preferred sides.

Notes

Don’t rush the onions—slow caramelization is key to rich flavor.

Use a meat thermometer to keep pork juicy without overcooking.

Swap cheeses to customize flavor—Swiss or provolone work great too.
