Description
This Easy Homemade Naan Bread brings the flavor and texture of your favorite Indian restaurant right to your kitchen. Made with simple pantry staples and cooked in a hot skillet, this naan turns out soft, bubbly, and perfectly golden every time. Ideal for pairing with curries, soups, or enjoyed on its own with melted butter or garlic ghee.
Ingredients
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon sugar
2 teaspoons instant yeast
1/4 cup olive oil
1/3 cup plain full-fat yogurt
1 teaspoon salt
3 cups all-purpose flour
Butter or ghee for brushing (as needed)
Instructions
1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Stir in the olive oil, yogurt, and salt. Add the flour gradually until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for 5–7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl. Cover with a damp towel and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 6–8 equal portions. Roll each into a ball, then flatten each ball into an oval about 1/4 inch thick.
6. Heat a cast iron or heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Place one naan into the dry pan and cook until bubbles form and the underside is golden (1–2 minutes). Flip and cook the other side for another 1–2 minutes.
7. Remove from the pan and immediately brush with melted butter or ghee. Repeat for the remaining dough. Serve warm.
Notes
For garlic naan, add minced garlic to the dough or brush with garlic-infused butter after cooking.
If your dough is too sticky to handle, oil your hands instead of adding extra flour to keep the naan soft.
A very hot, dry skillet is crucial to achieve those signature golden-bubbled spots—don’t rush the heat.
