Delicious Ground Beef Orzo

  • Author: Julia Koch

  • Yield: 4 servings

Description

A hearty, one-pan pasta dish combining tender orzo and seasoned ground beef simmered in a rich tomato sauce. Comforting, quick to prepare, and perfect for both busy weeknights and meal prep.

Ingredients

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 medium yellow onion, diced

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 pound ground beef

2 tablespoons tomato paste

1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes

2 cups beef broth

1 cup orzo pasta

1 teaspoon Italian seasoning

1 teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)

½ teaspoon black pepper

2 tablespoons fresh parsley or basil, chopped (optional)

Instructions

1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes until translucent.

2. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

3. Add the ground beef, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned and no longer pink. Drain excess fat if needed.

4. Stir in the tomato paste and cook for 1–2 minutes to deepen the flavor.

5. Add the diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 2–3 minutes to blend the flavors.

6. Pour in the beef broth and bring to a gentle boil. Stir in the orzo.

7. Reduce heat to a simmer, cover, and cook for 10–12 minutes, stirring occasionally until the orzo is tender and the liquid is mostly absorbed.

8. Fluff gently, taste, and adjust seasoning if needed.

9. Garnish with chopped parsley or basil and serve warm.

Notes

Use lean ground beef (85/15 or 90/10) for a more balanced dish with less grease and plenty of flavor.

Orzo cooks fast, so stir occasionally and check near the end to prevent overcooking or sticking.

Add a splash of broth or water when reheating leftovers to bring back the saucy texture.
