Description
This Caramelized Onion and Gruyere Dip is a warm, cheesy appetizer that blends the deep sweetness of slow-cooked onions with the nutty richness of Gruyere cheese. Perfect for holiday gatherings, dinner parties, or cozy nights in, it pairs beautifully with toasted bread, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
Ingredients
2 large yellow onions
2 tablespoons butter
1 cup Gruyere cheese, shredded
8 ounces cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup sour cream
2 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (optional)
Instructions
1. Slice the onions thinly and set aside.
2. In a heavy skillet, melt the butter over medium-low heat. Add onions and cook for 30–40 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized.
3. In a mixing bowl, combine cream cheese, sour cream, Gruyere, garlic, salt, and pepper. Stir until smooth.
4. Fold in the caramelized onions and thyme if using.
5. Transfer the mixture to an oven-safe baking dish.
6. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
7. Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
8. Broil for 2–3 minutes if you want an extra browned top.
9. Serve warm with bread, crackers, or veggies.
Notes
For best results, caramelize the onions slowly over low heat—don’t rush the process.
Let the cream cheese come to room temperature before mixing to ensure a smooth consistency.
